The developers at Hello Games have once again shown their dedication to expanding and enriching the universe of No Man’s Sky in 2024, with a series of major updates and community-driven expeditions. The year’s highlights include groundbreaking features like Cross-Save, support for the new PlayStation 5 Pro, and the return of the beloved SSV Normandy SR1 from Mass Effect. Here’s a look back at what made 2024 a stellar year for No Man’s Sky and what’s on the horizon.

A Year of Expansive Updates

Hello Games kicked off the year with a series of transformative updates that introduced new depth and variety to the game:

  • OMEGA Update: A complete overhaul of the expedition system, alongside enhanced starship customization and breathtaking rendering improvements for water and clouds.
  • ORBITAL Update: Elaborate new space stations and mechanics that allow for more immersive space exploration.
  • WORLDS Part I: Added diverse planetary biomes, enriching the game’s visual and ecological landscapes.
  • AQUARIUS Update: Stunning underwater environments and improved aquatic gameplay.

The result? A universe more vibrant, engaging, and diverse than ever before.

Five Unique Community Expeditions

This year also featured five thematic community expeditions, each offering players a unique gameplay experience and exclusive rewards. The expeditions will be re-run during the holiday season to give players a second chance to participate:

  1. Omega (Nov 27 – Dec 11): Explore the universe through diverse milestones and unravel a compelling mystery.
  2. Adrift (Dec 11 – Dec 25): Survive in a barren universe devoid of trading or support.
  3. Liquidators (Dec 25 – Jan 8): Take part in high-stakes combat against a spreading galactic brood.
  4. Aquarius (Jan 8 – Jan 22): Embark on an aquatic adventure to catch fish and craft seafood delicacies.
  5. The Cursed (Jan 22 – Feb 5): Navigate a haunting reality filled with eerie voices and limited travel options.

Players who missed out on these events now have the opportunity to earn exclusive rewards, including customizations, starships like the Iron Vulture and Starborn Runner, and even a ghostly frigate.

Cross-Save: Seamless Progress Across Platforms

The long-requested Cross-Save feature is finally here, enabling players to continue their adventures across a multitude of platforms, including PC, consoles, VR, and the Nintendo Switch. This transformative feature allows for:

  • Easy save transfers between platforms via a dedicated server.
  • The ability to explore seamlessly on consoles, handheld devices, and VR systems.

Although rolling out gradually through a beta phase, this marks a significant milestone for Hello Games, ensuring continuity for players who have invested thousands of hours in their spacefaring journeys.

Enhanced Experience on PlayStation 5 Pro

With the launch of the PlayStation 5 Pro, No Man’s Sky has pushed the boundaries of visual fidelity and performance. The game now boasts:

  • Crisp 4K resolution at 60fps and early support for 8K at 30fps.
  • Enhanced lighting, ultra-quality reflections, and improved ambient occlusion.
  • Stunning upgrades to PSVR2, delivering unparalleled immersion.

These enhancements, already live as part of The Cursed update, showcase the game’s adaptability to cutting-edge hardware.

The Normandy Returns

In celebration of Mass Effect’s annual N7 Day, the iconic SSV Normandy SR1 has returned to No Man’s Sky. Players can partake in an overhauled version of the original expedition to add the legendary frigate to their fleet. This collaboration between Hello Games and BioWare highlights the developers’ shared love for science fiction and gaming communities. Normandy from Mass Effect in No man's sky
